Emmanuel Sam bags valedictorian award at 3rd UHAS Congregation

The third congregation of the University of Health and Allied Sciences since its inception in 2012 was held on 14th July, 2018 in the CEDI Auditorium at the main campus of the University in Sokode-Lokoe, Ho. This is organised annually to confer degrees on students who have successfully completed their program of study in the University.

This year’s congregation was graced by high profile guests and attendees, most of whom are families of the graduands. The Guest Speaker for the occasion was Dr. Jemima Dennis Antwi, and the Minister of State, Tertiary Education, Hon. Prof. Kwesi Yankah was there as the Guest of Honour.

A total of five hundred and fifty four (554) students were graduated this year with Bachelor and Masters Degree in their respective programs.

Dr. Jemima Dennis Antwi shared her experience in school with the graduands and advised them to brace themselves up to meet the challenges they are likely to face in the outside world.

Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. John Owusu Gyapong delivered a report on the state of the University and made a few highlights on what the institution has been up to in the past year. According to him, the Nursing students who took the Licensure examinations have made 100% passes for two consecutive years amongst other successes.

He however quickly added that they take examinations seriously and therefore they will root out the canker of any form of malpractices. He disclosed that some students who violated the rules of examination received disciplinary actions ranging from withdrawal, suspension and caution. Infrastructure development was one challenge he noted was delaying the smooth running of the university. He added that the partnership with the Chinese Government will see some of the projects commence soon. He also urged the Minister of State, Tertiary Education to distribute the GET Fund equitably and not equally.

Hon. Prof. Kwesi Yankah also pledged his support to ensure that the University receives the necessary support from the government.

The man of the day and a Physician Assistant, Mr. Emmanuel Sam belonging to the School of Medicine accrued a CGPA of 3.75 making him the Valedictorian. He picked the Dr. Pascoal Mocumbi Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Physician Assistantship Programme and the Vice-Chancellor's Prize for the Overall Best Graduating UHAS Student.

In his speech, he recounts how his academic journey was a long one and obstructed at some point by financial constraints. He expressed his sincerest gratitude to his family, lecturers, and friends who in diverse ways made his success a reality.

Other students received awards in their various fields of study.

Prof. Edwin Kwame Wiredu Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Bachelor of Dietetics Programme was received by Mr. Jones Kwame Dorkenoo.

Prof. Edwin Kwame Wiredu Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences Programme went to Mr. Stephen Amankwah Adomako.

Mr. Cephas Elekusi picked the Dean's Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Bachelor of Physiotherapy Programme.

The ACP Christiana Binka Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Bachelor of Midwifery Program was received by Ms. Eva Akpablah.

Mr. Firmin Aduko Agomna received the Dr. (Mrs.) Patience Fleischer Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Bachelor of Nursing Program.

The Dr. Delanyo Dovlo Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Bachelor of Public Health Nursing Program was picked by Ms. Malwine Yayra Gadawu.

The Prof. Fred Binka Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Bachelor of Public Health Programme (All options) was received by Mr. Vasco Ayere Avoka.

The Prof. Margaret Kweku for the Best Graduating Female Student in Bachelor of Public Health Programme (All options) went to Ms. Victoria Nyarko.

Mr. Vasco Ayere Avoka also received the Dr. Hideyo Noguchi Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Bachelor of Public Health (Disease Control) Programme.

The Dr. Moses Adibo Prize for Best Graduating Student in Bachelor of Public Health (Environmental Health) program went to Mr. Saviour Selase Ahiafe.

Ms. Enyonam Rachael Sedo picked the Prof. Edwin Afari Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Bachelor of Public Health (Health Information) program.

The Dr. Frank Nyonator Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Bachelor of Public Health (Health Promotion) program went to Ms. Suraiya Umar.

Mr. Michael Lebene received the Madam Comfort Anthonio Lumor Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Bachelor of Public Health (Mental Health) program.

The African Nutrition Society Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Bachelor of Public Health (Nutrition) program was picked by Mr. Daniel Nkuah.

The SPH Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Master of Public Health (MPH) program went to Ms. Phyllis Atta Parbey.

The Prof. Fred Binka Prize for the Best Graduating Student with Demonstrated Service to the University Community was received by Mr. Divine Kporha.
