Bring Back My Africa!
Many systems have been disregarded, if not devastated, by the turbulent wave of globalization. Customs and norms have been raked off the main streets of our modern world.
Traditions have been marginalized and morality has been drowned in the deep waters of fashion. Unfortunately the consciences and sensitivities of society seems to have also been blinded by the invincible forces of this modern recklessness. This is not Africa. This can't be Africa!
The Africa I know wouldn't teach it's youth to insult leaders on social media. It wouldn't be tolerant to deviant behaviours. My Africa has severe repercussions for lawbreakers. My Africa hates immorality. Unfortunately my Africa is lost.
Take the entertainment industry for instance. Africa had a healthy form of entertainment in the past. Musicians sang good music, which was both educating and entertaining. African dance complemented the music to covey a message to the public. But we've lost that in recent times.
Why did sense vanish from our music? I mean look at the kind of songs we hear nowadays: just a junk package of immorality, and that's the rhythm to which we dance. We claim we want to be at level with the Western world and all we do is alloy their "foolishness" with our refined morality. Worse case scenario reflects in the videos: nudity has become the only message our music videos convey to the world. Surely this can't be Africa.
Am I the only one thinking we should fine musicians who compose "meaningless" songs? I hope not.
It'll definitely be unfair on my side not to talk about the movie industry as well. What have they been teaching our teens nowadays? Rather than teaching the masses that stealing is an intolerable act, we teach canny ways to get away with theft. We teach how to get away with murder.
We teach how to seduce our superiors for favours. We teach how archaic it is to still be obeying parents at youthful age, we make the criminals heroes in our movies, and these values have deranged the consciences and instincts of the young ones, making them violent and uncontrollable, then we turn to ask why society is so vicious and lawless. This wasn't the Africa our forefathers thread on. This can't be the Africa our ancestors fought for. Something valuable is missing.
Maybe it's just an awkward nightmare, or maybe it's just a blurred vision but as wide as my eyes are opened, I can't see Africa, so as far as I'm concerned, Africa is lost, deeply buried in the porous soil of westernization. And if society could only dig a little deeper, it could bring back my Africa.

Almost everything I see here is quite subjective. I dont know the eyes with which you see but unfortunately, I dont see such. Immorality has been there since time immemorial. The difference is that we have much info now than previously. Data shows that morality is rather decreasing, and as civilisation gets better at the different parts of the world, our moral virtues measured by love, kindness, respect etc are gradually increasing.
ReplyDeleteAs i said earlier, maybe the data isnt correct, or better still, maybe I have different eyes.
But as we point out the wrongs and perverts, can we suggest pragmatic ways of curbing them?
I'm sure if we got to know what it means to dig deeper, we may be able to change for the best. Without a clear explanation society might dig and dig and dig, until we end up sinking ourselves.. .Lol. I guess you dont want that. Do you?
Thanks for your comment Mr. Gyan. But for your view that the content of this text are subjective, I bet to differ. I don't think wearing skimpy dresses in videos or walking half naked in streets is an act that society hails in high esteem. It has nevery been embraced by the African society. This may be a common practice in America but this is Ghana sorry to say.
DeleteImmorality has always been there as you already mentioned but it was an abomination in the past.It was seen as an unacceptable act until modernization came to tell us it's okay to expose yourself; That same sex marriage isn't wrong. That it's it's okay to do whatever you want because it's your right to. Are these what you're saying you can't see?
Modernization didn't introduce immorality I agree, but it modernize, to turn a moral wrong into a civil right. It has come to blind the eyes of society to what was initially wrong and this is what this text is trying to point at . Hope you get this.
Thanks
