Power play in NUGS worrisome - Francis Attitsogbui

President of the Volta Regional bloc of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Hon. Attitsogbui Doe Francis described the power struggle and internal wrangling in the union at the national level as worrisome and very unfortunate and has barricaded the smooth running of the administration and further diminishing the impact of NUGS.

He was speaking at the 1st Central Committee meeting which was held yesterday 25th May, 2018 at the Binka Hall of the School of Public Health in the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS). The meeting which brought a number of student leaders from tertiary institutions in the region was prompted by some key issues that needed immediate attention.

The Central Committee is the second highest decision making body of NUGS hence making decisions taken at such meetings concrete and valid for running the administration.

Secretary of the Provincial SRC, Hohoe Campus of UHAS,  Hon. Vatoafi Freeman in his opening address welcomed honourable members to the august house and craved their indulgence to actively participate in the proceedings on the floor of the house.

Minutes of the Senate meeting held in Ho, Trafalgar campus of UHAS was read to seek the views, objections and approval from the members. Ms. Pamela Klutse, Women's Commissioner of the Union stated at the meeting the need for the union to have its own Secretariat where they can carry out administrative activities. She believed that the current administration can initiate the process and will be continued by successive administrations.

The Local NUGS Presidents of the various tertiary institutions present took turns to deliver their institutional report which was critiqued by members of the house. Issues of fees, infrastructure, transportation and dues payment run through the reports of the various institutions and the President promised to step in with his executives to find lasting solutions to it.

The President of Volta Regional NUGS bloc in his state of the Union address highlighted some positive strides they have made ever since they took office in February, 2018. He mentioned that SRC Secretary of the Jasikan Training College, Mr. Sakyi Richmond was supported with an amount of GHC 1,000.00 to undergo an idiopathic sclerosis surgery.

He disclosed that an amount of GHC 2,096.50 was passed on to them as debt by the previous administration led by Hon. Divine Kporha. Financial constraints has crippled the numerous projects they intend to undertake in some institutions according to the President. Hon. Attitsogbui sought the views of the honourable members on how the Regional bloc of NUGS can be injected with substantial financial resources to enable them discharge their duties effectively.

He recounted quite a number of instances where he and his abled executives finance programs and projects from their own pockets which was gradually becoming an opposition to their administration.

"The factions at the national level of NUGS is as a result of the political infiltration and this is weakening the weight of the union", he said. Dues from member institutions is paid to the mother association every year and since it's divided at the top, the students of this country don't see the impact of the Union.

Hon. Attitsogbui opined that institutions in the Volta Region stop paying capitation to the National NUGS and redirect all those financial resources to the Regional bloc instead.

Committees were formed at the meeting to assist the executives to run the affairs of the union. Letters of appointment were served by the Secretary of the Union, Hon. Sodoke Ewoenam Ernest to the members prior to the meeting to reply in the affirmative or rejection.

All those present at the meeting secured and cemented their appointment and were sworn in by the Chief Justice, His Lordship Hillary Bright.
