Cultural Display Mark Day 2 of Unified Week Celebrations On UEW, Ajumako Campus
Just as there hasn’t been a tree without roots, a cultural week celebration on the campus of the Faculty of Ghanaian Languages Education is never complete without a cultural display.
The second day of the Unified Week Celebration organized by the JCRC, SRC and ASGAL executives was electrified with wonderful traditional dances to buttress the amazing speeches delivered by the professionals of Ghanaian Languages Education.
The event, chaired by Dr. Regina Ceaser, a former Head of department for the department of Ga-Dangme Education and the current coordinator of the Graduate School on UEW, Ajumako campus, aimed at promoting the appreciation and understanding of other people’s cultures so as to foster unity, tranquility and peaceful development of the nation.
In the chairperson’s acceptance speech, Dr. Ceaser encouraged each and every individual to strive to understand the deeper meanings of the displays as well as appreciate the lessons associated with them.
Her speech was followed by a presidential address by the ASGAL president, Napari John Naporo. In his presidential address, Napari pinpointed on some achievements of ASGAL. These achievements include the provision of quality well-customized ASGAL lacoste to students, provision of quality customized exercise books, renovation of ASGAL notice boards, teaming up with SRC and JCRC to organize the Unified Week Celebration among others.
These achievements however, he said, cannot be mentioned without stating the challenges they face as a body. He mentioned that the unwillingness to students to pay their ASGAL dues is a major setback which can jeopardize the vision of the board if not treated as a priority.
The speech was followed by wonderful cultural displays from the Dagbani unit. As usual they set the ball rolling with the captivating dance.
The Dagaare unit followed with their energetic ‘Bawa’ dance. With xylophones as their main instruments of dancing, they displayed an undoubtedly rich culture. Everyone was astonished.
The beautiful ‘Bobobo’ dance (the love dance) from Ewe unit created a serene atmosphere for love. The women exhibited a calm yet beautifully attractive display on the field. They were soon joined by males from the other units who could not resist the attraction of the ‘Bobobo’ dance.
Mr. Pascal Kpodo, a lecturer of the College of Languages education, gave an intense keynote address to the gathering.
In his address, Mr. Kpodo touched on the role of the Ghanaian Language teacher in the development of the nation. He stated that ‘Education is the Key to Success’ hence there is the need for the Ghanaian Language teacher to use education to increase the literacy rate in the country by producing more people who can read write and understand as well as alligate poverty by providing their students with the requisite skills needed for them to function efficiently and effectively in the job market.
The Dangme unit set the function ablaze with the ‘Lukui’ dance, the ‘Ahojo’ dance and the ‘Soweto’ dance respectively.
An equally outstanding dance followed by the Gonja unit who performed the ‘Ashia’ dance.
The Gurune unit performed the beautiful ‘Poni’ dance which was said to be one of their all-time-favorite dances.
The Ga unit shook the grounds with a vivid explanation of the Homowo festival. They touched on the origin of Homowo which literary means “hooting at hunger”. The ‘Wulomo’(chief priest) of the Gas on UEW, Ajumako campus, Nuumo Bamfro I, established that the festival is packed with a series of events which includes ‘Nmaadumo’(planting of corn and a time for the ban on drumming and noise-making), ‘nmaa faa’(harvesting of corn and a time for the uplifting of the ban on drumming and noise-making), ‘Nsho bulemo’(purification of the sea), ‘haaji ayeleyeli’(twins festival) among others.
The Kasim unit performed the wonderful ‘Line’ dance got everyone astonished. Indeed it was a dance to behold.
The Kusaal unit climaxed the event with the ‘Tin’ dance. In fact, this was an enchantingly beautiful dance.
Mr. Francis Tsatsu Owulah, on behalf of the chairperson gave the closing remarks by appreciating all who invested their time and efforts to make the function a successful one. On this note, the event came to an end after a powerful Islamic prayer.
