NUGS Women Commissioner Empowers Ladies On UEW, Ajumako Campus.
The Women Empowerment Summit held under the theme: The today’s Woman and organized by Rhoda Asabir Ampah; NUGS Women Commissioner was indeed one of its kind. The summit saw the likes of Ms. Delphina B. Jentina Asaase Yaa (founder of Woso World), Mrs. Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah (Registrar, College of Languages Education) and Dr. Rev Joyce Rosalind Aryee (CEO, Salt and Light Ministries) who graced the occasion with powerful speeches that uplifted the self-esteem of the beautiful women that attended the summit.
In her welcome address, the NUGS Women Commissioner, Rhoda Asabir Ampah stressed that the main purpose of gathering was to listen to influential women, learn from their experience and be motivated and empowered to fulfill our duties to the society as ‘women’. She also entreated the ladies present to participate effectively and actively in the summit so as to get the best out of the dignitaries.
Ms. Delphina B. Jentina Asaase Yaa, founder of Woso World, was the first to deliver her speech on ‘BUILDING SELF CONFIDENCE’.
In her speech, she advised ladies to avoid panicking, rather be bold and take responsibility. “Try something new. Trying new things will help you gain more confidence as you progress. Develop an action plan; write your priorities down and put it to practice. Attend club/group meetings, ask questions and contribute in discussions. Find a ‘Mentor’ who is an expert in the field you endeavor and ‘Invest in yourself”, she said. This interaction-like speech intrigued the ladies available and set the atmosphere for the next speech.
The registrar of the College of Languages and chairperson of the summit, Mrs. Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah, who delved into ‘EFFECTIVE CAREER AND FAMILY RESPONSIBILITIES MANAGEMENT’ established that inasmuch as women should value themselves and get mentors to guide them in academia and other fields, they should also be willing to take feedbacks and creative criticisms.
‘Don’t be offended if you get a negative feedback; rather be willing to use such feedbacks to eliminate your weaknesses and failures. Learn how to maintain multi-tasking in order to reduce stress. Identify practices that will suit your situation and utilize them. Seize every opportunity to learn, be self-disciplined and avoid procrastination’, she added. She also encouraged women to have “accountability partners”, that is, people who we open up to with our issues. She ended by stressing that women should ‘work to live and not live to work.
The summit was climaxed with a speech from Dr. Rev. Rosalind Aryee, the CEO of Salt and Light Ministries, on the topic ‘WOMEN IN STUDENT LEADERSHIP & WOMEN TO ENGAGE IN POLITICS’.
In her speech she emphasized that is not fair for women to sit and watch men to do everything alone. It is best for women to also take up political responsibilities and contribute in managing the affairs of the nation since women are known to be the best managers or time and resources. She further suggested five (5) ways to enhance women in political offices. These are
Supporting women in the Local Assembly. Diversifying the pool of female candidates. Raising societal awareness in student leadership. Creation of cross-parties. Building the capacity of female political leadership.
She advised women however to be careful not to become targets since ‘some’ men-in-politics can do anything just to tarnish the image of women who seek power. She mentioned the likes of Malala Yousafzai (Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate), Joyce Banda (former president of Malawi) among others as examples of women who has made an impact in the political arena.
The summit came to an end after the presentation of citations to the distinguished dignitaries, a vote of thanks by Regina Mensah and a closing prayer by the school chaplain, Collins Ahinapong.
The Awenade Cultural Troupe grouped graced the occasion with amazing cultural displays.
