2018 UG SRC ELECTIONS CALLED OFF

CAMPUS RADIO GHANA    19/04/2018

2018 UG SRC ELECTIONS CALLED OFF

The 2018 University of Ghana Student Representative Council (SRC) election has been postponed indefinitely.

This is the second time this year’s election has been postponed.

Although the cause of the postponement is not immediately known, many have attributed it to the myraid of controversies that have characterised the electioneering process.

Earlier, the Electoral Commission (EC) postponed Wednesday’s polls to Thursday April 19 to enable it adequately prepare for the elections.

But a statement signed by chairperson of the EC, Kweku Quansah on Wednesday evening stated that ” in consultation with the school authorities [the EC] is by this notice officially informing the student body that the elections slated for Thursday 19th April 2018 has been called off until further notice.

Prior to the postponement, 4 presidential candidates, “in the face of many irregularities and breaches pertaining to the upcoming elections, filed an injunction on the elections, pending a definite determination by the SRC Judicial Board”.

These candidates contend some individuals have special interests in this election and are seeking to manipulate the system.

The EC further apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Students had questioned the readiness of the Electoral Commission to conduct the 2018 polls on the scheduled date.

This has heightened the already existing apathy among the student populace.

In the mean time, Univers News is learning that the new date for the election is likely to be Tuesday April 24, 2018.
