MoH To Employ 14,000 Jobless Nurses Soon

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has disclosed plans to employ 14,000 jobless nurses who completed their training two years ago.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the MoH, Mr Robert Cudjoe, although the nurses are yet to officially inform the ministry of their intended demonstration at the Jubilee House, government has decided to demonstrate commitment by employing 14,000 of their members.

This comes after the Coalition of Unemployed Nurses and Midwives gave government a three-week ultimatum to release their financial clearance and get them posted else they will storm the Jubilee House with protests.

The angry nurses said several engagements have been held between them and the government with numerous promises made to release their financial clearance but government has failed to honour them.

The aggrieved unemployed health workers hit the principal streets of Kumasi on Wednesday, 5 September 2018 to demand their financial clearance.

Hundreds of them wore red arm bands and held placards, some of which read:" Enough of fake promises, Hon. Minister", "Mr President, we need our financial clearance", “Post bonded nurses and midwives now!".

Speaking to Class News, Mr Cudjoe said the decision to employ a fraction of the nurses is a result of the ongoing protests in various regions across the country in demand for jobs pending a proper dialogue with the coalition on the way forward.

He said: “We have received information although not officially from them about their demonstrations in some of the regions of our country. Some of us have been talking to them and I believe other officers have been able to also discuss issues with the leadership and all that, so, we have pleaded with them.

“The good news is that the government has given us the go ahead to recruit 14,000 of the nurses who completed about two years ago. The clearance will take effect in February 2019.

“Now that we have this number to be posted in the next couple of months, we’ll appeal to them to call off the demonstration and we’ll continue to jaw-jaw with them.”
